Rajah Brooke's Birdwing Puddling Site


Hey ya'll
First of all, allow me to apologize for the lack of updates. It amuses me somewhat to see that, despite my absence, the blog has continued to receive a fair trickle of visitors! Anyway I just got back from my field work at Ulu Geroh about slightly under a week ago. I am living there with the Semai community, an indigenous group of people of Peninsular Malaysia, as part of the field work process for my PhD dissertation.  Among other amazing natural wonders, such as several species of Rafflesia which flower there, there rainforests surrounding the Ulu Geroh settlement is renowned for having a high diversity of insect species, most notably, butterflies. It is also one of the few remaining sites in Malaysia where the Rajah Brooke's Birdwing butterfly gather in large numbers on the banks of river to imbibe upon the nutrient rich salts that are present in the mud. I shared the video of one such puddling site sometime earlier this week and so it only natural that it would soon be followed by the photographs. Check it out. 

Some of these butterflies grew so "drunk" on salts that they abandoned much of their usual, jittery dispositions and could be coaxed to climb upon my outstretched palm.

Butterflies precariously perched on a layer of algae that has grown over some of the more stagnant puddling sites. Some of these algae platforms "give way" when there are too many butterflies on top of them and the "Drunker" are not always able to react fast enough and  fall into the water.

Chinese Wildlife Park a devious guise for a Tiger Farm

ATTENTION!!!

This is a picture of the Xiongshen Tiger and Bear Mountain Village in Guilin, China. The establishment houses over 1500 captive tigers which is the largest concentration of tigers in the world (perhaps more than half of what is thought to remain in the wild). Despite being littered with billboards declaring the park's dedication to protecting wildlife, many of the animals are skinny, underfed, and covered with sores. The reason for this, as revealed in the stunning expose by Richard Jones in 2010, the tigers are far more valuable dead than alive.

The Wildlife Park was founded in 1993 with only 60 tigers by Chinese millionaire Zhou Weisen. Under the guise of conservation and re-population, the park launched intensive breeding initiatives that quickly raised their numbers to the hundreds, then thousands (The park's current population of 1500 tigers is more than 2500% of the original group). And yet, the sad fact is that many of these tigers will never be rehabilitated. Some tigers are kept in open cages for display, others are locked in small concrete enclosures in perpetual darkness.

Here, they will spend their lives in concrete cells wasting away from malnutrition, neglect, and illnesses until they die. The nightmarish "tour" of Xiongshen Tiger and Bear Mountain Village ends with a trip to the establishment's "Science Hall", where a cheery salesperson (often a young woman) will offer to sell visitors six- and nine- year vintages of tiger wine at at £60, £92 and £185 a bottle. As quoted by Jones, "We have more than 1,500 tigers,' she says. 'There is no lack of raw materials for us. There are a few hundred dead tigers lying in our freezers. I can promise you that we sell only authentic tiger products." This response is significant for two reasons the first being that it displays the flippantly callous attitudes of the staff for the well being of their tigers, the second (even worse) would seem to imply that Xiongshen Tiger and Bear Mountain Village is not much of a wildlife park, as much as it is the highly publicized "cover" for a tiger farm.

Tiger wine is a medicinal tonic made by distilling the bones of tigers in rice wine/spirits for a long period of time. The resulting concoction is said to be an elixir that can cure arthritis, relieve rheumatism, and even prolong life! Understandably, it is also one of the most expensive! The bones of a single tiger, which might weight about 55 pounds, can sell for as much as 250,000 pounds to the right buyer. As one might imagine, seedy entrepreneurs and greedy businessmen are all to quick to exploit this myth which has resulted in what is believed to be one of the largest scale trade of exotic animal products in history!

Tiger Bone Wine is a non-elixir, based upon the erroneous claim that the distillation process can capture the "essence" or "strength" of the tiger. Scientifically speaking, these claims hold no merit as the bones of tigers may be said to be essentially the same to the bones of cows, or sheep, or even humans! They are all made out of the same biological substance and have no medical properties to speak of! Indeed, this fact has been recognized by several progressive traditional medicine practitioners in China who have come up with herbal alternatives to this supposedly "miracle" cure.

Although the Chinese government have recognized tigers as endangered animals and have implemented laws against the killing of tigers, there are no laws against the re-appropriation of tiger parts from animals that have supposedly died of "natural causes".
This is the issue! Improper legislation and blatant loopholes in conservation laws provide seedy business men ample opportunities for exploitation. Couple that with a desperate public willing to pay through the nose for a mythical elixir and you have an ethical, environmental disaster waiting to happen! This needs to change! It's time to start educating ourselves!

note. as of 2012 Xiongshen Tiger and Bear Mountain Village in Guilin, China was still fairly popular among tourists (despite campaigns and lobbying by various internal and external parties) on websites such as TripAdvisor, with one visitor from Melbourne even commenting that the park is "Sensational because you will not see stuff like that in our oh so politically correct west which panders to the minority and aims to spoil our fun by subjecting us to a nanny state."

Love Insects, Love Life

Hey ya'll

today's post will be more of a rant and a personal call for action more than anything else. I realized if I don't speak up for the insects, no one will. Are you an insect lover yourself? If the answer is yes, then maybe it is time for us to raise our voices a little higher. These small, often overlooked, creatures form the basic building blocks of our existence! Despite all the talk of conservation and animal rights going on, not many people stop to consider the plight faced by many insects as a result of climate change, habitat loss, and general environmental degradation. It is time to understand that these living things are not "just bugs". I really hate to put it in such words, but if a species of monkey goes extinct, life would probably still manage to go on as it is... but if an entire species of bee, or wasp goes extinct, you can be sure that life would not longer be the same as we know it! The majority of our world's pollination activities are attributed to insects! In fact, many higher order of plants are pollinated by insects! Many of these plants are also species specific pollinators which means they are pollinated only by specific types of insects. It's a very simple equation, really: No pollination = no propagation of plant species = no more fruits and flowers! It is time to understand that these animals are not "just bugs". A world without insects is a world without plants and a world without life!

But I didn't just write here to rant. We can prevent this! The change begins with you! How? Observe these simple steps. 
  1. Do some research! Be observant of the world around you! What kinds of insects come and go in your neighborhood. What sorts of plants do they feed on? What can you learn about them? 
  2. Satellite Gardens. Cordon of small parts of your garden as an allocated space for insects! Plant the host plants of insect larvae (if you can identify them), and grow all sorts of flowering plants that wasps, butterflies, and bees can feed on! This way you will ensure that the insects always have a place to return to and a source upon which they can rely for food! In our rapidly developing world, where vast plains of vegetation are constantly being cleared in the name of progress, these small sanctuaries may be all that's left for the insects at the end of the day. 
  3. SPREAD the word! The more satellite gardens we provide, the more we can ensure the insect's survival! If you are a student, speak to your school administrator about this. Speak to your friends, your neighbors, anyone who will listen. Together, we can make a difference.

Loving Lycaenids


Hey ya'll 

The next few weeks are going to be exceptionally hectic!!! Not only are the PhD application dates drawing perilously close, all the activities that I have so "cleverly" spaced out at the start of the year all seem to be falling in "that week" or "another"... more out of necessity than anything and I'm "forced" to get those out of the way as well! To top it all off, another animal under my care has fallen ill. Angel, our budgerigar has been having a case of the runs. He's recovered from them before, but I'm not taking any risk. I've written in to Dr. Jenny for a prescription of anti-diarrhea medication. Unfortunately for all parties involved I can only fetch them on Friday which means... I basically have to make time to get away from my marking and writing to get the medication. Dr. Jenny has also asked for a stool sample... as fresh as possible, so that makes my window a lot narrower. Well, at least I've finally started to find a narrower and more precise focus for my PhD research topic.

With all the mayhem that's been going on though, I am quite glad to report that the lycaenids have started to return!!! Related perhaps to the recent bout of construction work that has been mushrooming all around the campus grounds of late (prompting my initiative to kick-start a butterfly garden/breeding pit stop), Lycaenid numbers had dropped to an all new low and I was beginning to think that many of them would be gone for good! Indeed, for the past 6 months I had been fearing as such. These butterflies rely, after all, on the hospitality of the specific species of ants that hosted them and with all the digging that's been going on... why let's just say I was very much concerned. Apparently, some butterflies are made of much stronger stuff! And of course, their ants too, for I saw today, on a patch of wild flowers, a rabble of these minuscule butterflies! What a wonderful sight! My dearest friend and fellow insect blogger Brittanie McCormack is quite fond of saying that Nature has a way of connecting with those who loves Her, and I truly believe that! But all in all, I'm just so glad to be seeing these guys back here again! Perhaps, in time the other varieties of larger lycaenids would start to return as well.

Every Lepidopterists Dream

Hey ya'll

I really wanted to save this post for tomorrow but the moment I removed these Ornithoptera from the spreading board, well I just couldn't control myself!!! Ornithoptera, surely one of the most coveted of all butterflies for any Papilionidae lover and now I have here my very own pair, beginning with the nominate species Ornithoptera priamus (Common/Green Birdwing) and the much rarer Ornithoptera rothschildi (Rothschild's Birdwing). So named for their enormous wingspans and avian-like flight, Ornithoptera are one of the largest butterflies in the world (although, O. Rothschildi turned out to be a lot smaller than I thought it would be). Can't express my elation and gratitude for having received such wonderful butterflies and it is only my deepest hope and dream to be able to be directly involved in their conservation someday.

And so I will leave you for now, as I continue to marvel at these wonderful butterflies and imagine how they must have looked like, alive, and flying free, though in the meantime I will also reserve them a special place on my lepidoptera wall.

SOS: Save our Swallowtails!!!


Hey ya'll!!!

From the looks of it, it seems that the swallowtails are back in season again right now so to those of you who have gardens, do expect to find their caterpillars chomping down on your citrus plants!!! Just in case you do not know, the caterpillars come in two forms depending on their developmental stage (which is caled an instar) and either resemble brown and white lizard/bird poop, or green wormy things that look not unlike the Poke'mon "Caterpie"! Anyway, if you are the squeamish type, or the kind of feel very strongly that these little guys are pests that need to be gotten rid off... STAY YOUR HAND FOR A MOMENT and put that Ridsect back under the sink!!! Give me a shout instead! If you are from around the Kuala Lumpur or Klang Valley area, I promise, I'll do my best to get to you as soon as I can to collect and raise these (to me) precious babies to adulthood! I know that not all of us can appreciate caterpillars for what they are (and I suppose it IS understandable!) but I'm pretty sure that most of us can still appreciate the beauty and importance of the adult butterfly!

Butterfly Hunting and Other Adventures

I recently made a decision, to just do the things that I want, however "far out" or "unreasonable" they may sometimes seem. Due to the ever increasing certainty of certain circumstances regarding my being, I've begun to realize that all this effort that I am putting into my work right now... all this "stockpiling" I'm doing for the "future" pretty much counts for nothing if I never actually get to witness or enjoy that future first hand, and so instead I've started to learn to do something quite different (to me, anyway!) and that is take some time off to enjoy the present. And today, that is precisely what I did. It all started when I found myself, rather unexpectedly, with the entire morning off! No work. No exams to invigilate. Just a stack of assignment scripts I should be marking but have put on hold in the bottom drawer of my desk. So when a bunch of friends made plans to conduct a little "expedition" to the Forest today morning, I was rather quick to take them up on their most generous offer. I did not regret it.

The trip, though began on a rather dismal  tone as the sky was gray and huge rain-clouds threatened us with rain, gradually began to pick up the pace as the heavier rain clouds slowly blew away to reveal a moderately cloudy but still fairly sunny day. Consequently, as one might imagine, butterflies which were hiding away due to the cold weather of the morning gradually began to make their appearance as the day progresses. Like little dancers they were, in their gaudy and beautiful costumes of yellows, browns and blues, fluttering around and about us in a drunken haze. Butterflies of all shapes and sizes ranging from modestly small common grass yellows (Eurema hecabe) to the larger and more striking butterflies of the crows and tigers families (Danaiidae). At one point, while we were trailing the edge of the lake in search of Nepenthes, I even encountered a very large, and very beautiful female of the Helena's birdwing butterfly (Troides helena). Bug maniac that I am, I was in lepidoptera heaven, and I'm sure that these images will speak out for themselves.

I also took the opportunity to enlighten my expedition mates on some basic knowledge on butterfly anatomy, such as determining sex with non sexually dimorphic species.

No, I was not torturing the butterfly! I was simply showing Joanne and Naomi the "pencil hairs" which just out from the butterfly's abdomen to disperse pheromones during their courtship rituals.

Of course, the actual number of butterflies we encountered throughout the trek numbered more than are displayed here but not all of them were "catch-able" due to a combination of factors (mostly my limited stamina and the butterfly's own skill of grace and evasion). Aside from the birdwing we encountered by the lake, I did not see many other Papillionidae save for several Tailed jays (Graphium agamemnon) and what I think may be a Great Helen (Papilio iswara). What intrigues me most, however, was a fairly large hesperid (or at least, that's what it looked like) that was colored an iridescent greenish-blue that tapered to egg-yolk yellow around its thorax. We encountered only one such butterfly at the start of the trek but it was too quick for me and managed to escape without even so much as a picture shot. Anyone know any species that resemble the above description (however arbitrarily, it would still be interesting to know, so do message me or leave a comment if you do!).  Aside from butterflies we encountered an abundance of other insect life. As you may expect, from a habitat located next to a lake, there was also an abundance of dragon and damselflies of all shapes and sizes, some of which were truly most interesting!!! 

These damselflies, which were small and blue in color, were the most abundant and rather easy to catch. Unlike their kin and cousins (the dragonflies) they seemed to adopt a rather lazy sort of flight instead. I caught this individual simply by reaching out and plucking at it with my fingers.
These extremely colorful ones, on the other hand, were a lot more difficult. They  flitted quite  suddenly away from any approaching object and despite their striking coloration (and it really IS quite colorful if you take a nice long look; green eyes, blue thorax and an orange and teal striped abdomen) they are extremely difficult to spot once they flutter away into the undergrowth. 
But the "best" dragonfly that we spotted today must definitely be one of these. Not quite as abundant in number as the other species, these dragonflies were still undoubtedly one of the more striking ones that were present by the pond. It may not be noticeable here, but under the soft glow of the morning sun, its wings actually SPARKLE (that's right, SPARKLE) with the iridescence of bronzed gold. Unlike other dragonflies it's flight is rather lazy and when perched seems to delight in angling its wings this way and that to reflect the sun (though for what purpose this may be, I really can't say). 


And speaking of insects in the area, I shall not forget to mention the patches of insectivorous plants (that is, plants that eat insects) which we found there as well! They were all pitchers, mainly Nepenthesis gracilis (identified by Joanne), though I daresay if we looked closer and longer we may have found something else and Joanne mentions that their presence in the area is puzzling because they usually colonize places with low soil quality and this forest is clearly teeming with life!!! A possibly explanation however might be the acidity of thel ake water (which was rather murky in a chalky sort of way, suggesting high CO2 content) and these pitcher plants all grew very close to the bank.

The final half of our trip took us to the "abandoned shack", actually one out of two abandoned shacks, where Joanne and her friend, Steven, had previously found a pair of cinnamon tree-frogs. We had no such luck, though, and all we found when we pulled off the corrugated iron sheet that was covering the opening of a well was a pool of very clear stagnant water. The shack, however, was a different story and was quite a pleasure to explore. I discovered, upon entering that it was more of a medium sized house than a shack. It boasted a fair-sized domicile with an inner courtyard that led to two toilets. Various artifacts of the home's previous life remained in the building. The rotten frame for a bed, and cups and bowls that were so old they had began to cake with dirt and dust. But just as one life had passed from this now abandoned home, other lifeforms have found shelter and now called it home. The entire building consisted of a total of four rooms and all of these, were heavily colonized by bats of various species. I could tell summarily that a large majority of them were fruit bats though there were some of smaller varieties that might have been insectivorous bats (the emitted very high pitched quips that sounded very much like the sounds I've heard bats make when finding their way via echolocation). I could not tell them all apart though, or distinguish any individual species, but you will excuse me as I am no expert on chiroptera. Perhaps, the next time I return to this forest, I can bring along someone who is! Despite our efforts to remain absolutely silent, the bats objected to our presence somewhat, and we promptly made our way out of there the moment we noticed that many of them had began to stir and fly about. Naomi, being the smart one, stood outside but Joanne and I had to deal for a few moments with the rather unsettling over-head flutter of disoriented Bats!!!

Before long, it seemed as if it was too, our turn to head out of the forest. Such a pity, as I could have really stayed in there for hours on end! But there was still work to be done, and I had already enjoyed myself quite sufficiently. I gave a respectful bow to the one that guards these lands, and we began the steady but steep trek down. By the time we reached the base, it was just barely 12.00.

Butterfly Relocation Project pt. 2 ~ Heritage


Hey ya'll 

Five months ago, I was faced with the potential devastation of the way of life of my beloved butterflies. Due to expansion of the parking area, building of a highway, and construction of the university condominiums, large areas of land had to be cleared which in turn affected many of the butterflies' original breeding grounds/habitat. Not willing to leave anything to chance, I began to take proactive measures, culminating in Butterfly Relocation Project 1  which you can read all about HERE. To make a long story short, I scattered seeds of the butterflies' host plants in various locations around the same area (places which are less likely to be cleared for development) and began the slow and meticulous process of catching individual butterflies and releasing them at those sites.

Five months later, I had quite forgotten about my butterfly relocation sites, to be honest. Indeed, I had stopped checking up on them after the first month or so, but just by chance today I stumbled upon one of those sites again, and what appeared to be a barren and weed-strewn path turned out to be practically seething with butterflies!!! I had not seen them earlier because they were not flying high, rather, simply fluttering at ground level, feeding on the large variety of flowers that grew there naturally. The sight of so many butterflies... possibly the great, great, great grandchildren of the ones I relocated (many times over), fluttering about and not simply living, but thriving, was truly a sight to behold. It was like forgetting about a favorite childhood toy and then stumbling upon it by chance only to discover that it had improved better than ever! But don't just take my word of its success. I'll let these images do the talking. 



And in case you are hard pressed to believe that those tiny orange specks actually are butterflies...




Aren't they simply magnificent? The sight of them all, not just surviving, but thriving really brought a warm feeling to my heart!!! And it turns out that the Tawny coster (acraea terpsicore) were not the only butterflies that have reappropriated the environment as their home. Others, like the common grass yellow (eurema hecabe) and various other satyriinae were present too (not to mention a host of lycaeniidae and hesperiidae that I could not identify). Other more prolific butterflies that seem to have settled there were a pansy butterfly (though not the blue pansy, as I had hoped, but the peacock). 


What a beautiful sight, and what an inspiration as well!!! But the butterflies' settling here is anything but permanent. Land can still be claimed for construction and this little paradise that I have created can disappear in but a blink of an eye. If anything, this  has given me renewed drive to push for the butterfly conservation garden on our campus grounds... a place where we can shift the population to that will be safe for development, safe from pesticides. A place where the plants can thrive and butterflies may feed and breed and fly freely. A paradise for butterflies.

Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly.

URGENT ATTENTION: Hunt for the Blue Pansy (Junonia orithya)

Not many people would have noticed this, and not many may actually care...

but I have over the years witnessed a disturbingly drastic decrease in the number of blue pansy butterflies (Junonia orithya).

Once abundant all around the Klang Valley, they have become almost non-existent in places like Bangsar, Subang/Sunway area (where most of my field observations are). I know the butterfly in itself is not exactly threatened of endangered but I think it is very important  that we take note whenever species loose  their footholds in local environments. This, is after all how some species disappear seemingly "without any signs" from their once abundant habitats/environments. We have seen instances of this multiple times with various other animal species, and just because a butterfly species may be widespread does not make it invulnerable to such threats.

However, because of a clear lack of resources and manpower on my part, it is increasingly difficult for me to make any empiric claim to this based on my observations alone. As such, before I make a mountain out of a molehill, I would like to call out now, to my fellow lepidopterists, entomologists, environmentalists, and everyday photographers to keep an eye out for this beautiful butterfly, its larvae, or pupae and report any sightings (location, time, date and number of individuals with pictures, if possible) of them in urban areas to cyrenwong89@gmail.com.

Sometimes, I wonder...


Hey ya'll!!! 

The weekend finally came and guess what I am doing? That's right, sitting in my office (the air cond is off for some reason and it is centralized so I can just switch it on for myself) struggling through essay after essay and trying my best to give them an appropriate (and altogether not too low) grade! Whoever might tell you that teachers have it a lot easier because they do not have to study/research/write the essay are completely misguided and out of their minds because I can sure as heck tell you that this is not the case!!! Then again... I suppose I used to be one of those persons which just goes to show us that the grass is always greener on the other side.

It has been awhile, I believe, since I've had any particularly wild or creepy adventures and I can't help but wonder if that is in some part due to my "growing up" and getting a job. Which is to say  that you shouldn't get me wrong (I absolutely love my job!!!) though... I will admit that there are times when I allow myself to fall into the rut of contemplation (which is sometimes easily mistaken for depression) to think about the "what if" question. "What if my life had gone differently. What if I had gone into zoology studies, instead of the arts and humanities instead?" Always these questions, but they are redundant questions... because you play the hand you are dealt and that is precisely what I have always done. No point crying over what might have been or what should have been, always better to live in, and try to improve on the now. Have I "failed" myself by not living up to this "dream"... this "purpose" of mine? I cannot admit it... in fact, I will not even allow myself to think it. I have grown so much as a person, I have learnt so much, and still I continue to learn. Despite all that may have happened, despite all that has happened differently to how I may have envisioned it, I have not failed. But still sometimes, I wonder...

I wonder if the human condition will ever be satisfied? People are always wanting something more than what they have, I am always wanting more. The question is, will it ever end? Can it? Is it really possible to live, to thrive and grow without a goal in life? Is it possible to live without wanting anything, without wanting more than what we have? Or is this desire... this need for desire, really such a central part of the human condition? We have so much, as the dominant species on the planet the world is literally our oyster, and yet because we constantly acknowledge and are aware of the limits of what we have,  we constantly strive to break those limits to attain more. First the world, next the outer limits of space, finally the universe. Awareness. It is our greatest strength, that can sometimes be our greatest weakness... possible resulting in the end of our species, because something that constantly wants, can never be full, and something that can never be satisfied, will only take and take and take until it has consumed everything including the very things it needs to survive. I really don't know why I am thinking like this. And on a Sunday too!!!

Clearly, I need to get out of this concrete jungle for awhile and get back in touch with nature, where the jungles are not mere monuments, where the "tallest" and "largest" and "greatest" things are more than impressive corpses, stone-cold edifices constructed by man. Instead where these things live and breathe and connect with each other in ways more complex and intricate than I, or even science, can possibly ever truly comprehand. I love my job, but I can't wait for SWOT vacs. 


Life is starting to get tedious, and the Forest, She is calling.

Magnificent Millipedes

Hey ya'll 

The rainy season is always good news for many denizens of the undergrowth. It has been millions of years since the ancestors of our modern day arthropods first ventured onto land and before they had effectively begun to colonize it, many of them only inhabited it temporarily. For many of these early invertebrates, coming no land was simply a means through which they could feed in peace by escaping aquatic predators. Movement on land, as such, was often limited in that the animals typically grazed on moss and algae that grew near the shoreline and returned to the waters before the sun, wind and other elements dried them out.

As time went on however, these mosses and algae began to spread and grew from the shoreline towards the land interior, eventually covering much of the earth. As the plants traveled, so did the invertebrates. For many primitive creatures, movement was primarily a source through which to find food and so as plants diversified, so did the animals that first rose from the seas and from such humble beginnings, the first insects were born. Soon enough, predators started following these herbivores to the surface. They too began to adapt in a multitude of ways. Claws, stings, poisonous fangs. And so, there began an evolutionary arms race which resulted in what is possibly the most diverse of all animals species that we see in the world today. Indeed it is these animals which subsequently grew to be the various insects, arachnids and invertebrates that science has so meticulously classified today.

However, while many of these animals have diversified to the extent that they no longer resemble their ancestral counterparts (flying insects like butterflies, bees and dragonflies for instance are a fairly 'recent' and sophisticated development in insect evolutionary history) some did and continue to retain even the interstitial lifestyles their predecessors led in the past. Stuck, in a mysterious habitat that is always in between worlds, many of these animals can survive nowhere else but in the "twilight zone" that is the undergrowth. Consequently, when the raining season arrives, many of these creatures find their territories suddenly expanded. The sudden increase in moisture, in rotting vegetation and in fungi growth results in new pastures that they can explore and graze, and they generally do sometimes to alarming effect. Take this gigantic creature for instance.


This is a giant rusty millipede (Trigoniulus corallinus) and like any other millipede, it's name comes from the mistaken belief on its total number of legs. The term millipede, you see, comes from the latin words mille and pede literally meaning a thousand feet, and while no single millipede species in the world actually possesses such a copious amount of legs, the actual number of legs most millipedes posses is still rather commendable. Millipedes start out their lives as nymphs, juveniles that look very similar to their parents, which hatch from eggs laid in pockets in the ground and possess as little as only three pairs of legs! As the millipede ages, however, it sheds its outer skin and with each molt grows an additional set of legs. You might imagine, therefore that the total number of legs a particular millipede has can be something of a testament to its survivability in the wild! In the forest ecosystem, millipedes typically fulfill the same functions as earthworms, cockroaches and many other ground dwelling arthropod in that they recycle dead organic material that can be reabsorbed as nutrients into the soil. 


I found these particular millipedes today, on a particularly misty morning as I was making my way to my class. There, nestled among a pile of leaves and debris which had no doubt been washed out of the forest by last night's torrential downpour was a large creature coiled up an almost perfect circle. I made a mental note of it and hurried off to Postcolonial and Diasporic literature. It was to my extreme fortune and delight that the creature was still there even after my class had ended and I wasted no time in collecting it (for I had decided during class that it would make a wonderful addition to my personal collection, not to mention for observation and study). It was through poking about and digging in the soil for several minutes that I managed to find a total of four individuals of varying lengths. This, I thought was a real prize. FOUR MORE BEAUTIFUL MILLIPEDES TO ADD TO MY EVER GROWING FAMILY!!! Could this week leading up to my birthday get any better? 


They have been kept, for now, in a fairly large tank with moist soil and leaves to hide under. I feed them with pretty much the same fruits that I have been giving Paolo and Isabella although, it should be reminded for the amateur millipede breeder/enthusiast that fruits should only ever be used as a supplement and compost/decaying plant matter is always the best sort of staple diet for millipedes as it will ensure they get all the nutrients they need. (ACE Hardware sells pre-mixed compost and soil that is PERFECT for this but make sure you get the untreated ones). If kept properly, Millipedes are really incredibly long lived!!! Which means I'll have more than enough time to observe and learn more about these wonderful giants. Hopefully even breed them someday although I haven't had much luck. I think the soil I'm using isn't the right one.

I'm a Lepidopterist Writer!!!

Hey ya'll


I am so excited because I can finally proclaim that I am a lepidopterist writer, and not just the kin that publishes butterfly and creepy-crawly related articles on my blog either, for today the butterfly-article that I wrote for the university publication MONGA (The Monash Gazette) was finally put to print!!! I wrote the article sometime in the middle of 2011, at a time when I could ill-afford such projects as I was coming into the height of my thesis, and it was targeted primarily towards a highly industrialized audience, students who, though they would most certainly know what a butterfly is, may not actually know what a butterfly REALLY is. Indeed it has always been my hope (which, if you refer to my introductory post, is one of the reasons why I started this blog) to provide readers with a brief glance into the magnificent world of lepidopterology (the study of butterflies and moths) and perhaps in doing so, invoke some deep-seated and dormant appreciation for nature and insects (some of nature's most overlooked of residents) and the environment. Confessions of a Lepidopterist: The Secret World of Butterflies

 
The study of butterflies and moths is known as lepidopterology, the person who partakes in such activities (such as myself); a lepidopterist, and before you get lost in a bunch of big words, the term Lepidoptera - which is used as an umbrella category for all butterflies and moths - is really just a compound of two ancient greek words; lepi (scale) and pteron (wing) which basically refers to the ways in which the wings of butterflies and moths are colored. Now, anone who has ever tried to catch a butterfly or moth will know that when they touched the wings of these insects, a fine "dust" is left behind on their fingers. This "dust" is in fact millions of minute scales which overlap one another all over the insect's wings thus giving them the beautiful coloration and patterns of which the species is famous for. 

In actual fact, wing scales serve more than just beautification purposes. Besides functioning as biological billboards of sorts, signalling their sex and species to other Lepidoptera, wing scales also serve as the defense mechanism for many butterflies and moths - some of which are arranged to create cryptic colorations and patterns which enable them to blend in succesfully with their surroundings, others which are hair-like and loosely attached, enable the insect to make a quick slip or getaway when grasped in a predator's claws or beak. Some species of butterflies have even opted for the more unconventional scale-less wings. The glasswing butterflies of South America, for example, have wings so transparent that they appear almost invisible while fluttering amongst the leaves and debris of the forest floor. Consequently, it is perhaps arguable that it is this most prominent aspect of the insect which has transformed into the sort of poster image that comes to mind when thinking of insect or nature study.

On a more personal note, my own interest in butterflies extends far beyond that of specimen collecting and spreading, and although some of my current goals include butterfly rehabilitation in urban habitats, and the accumulation of a specimen field guide to the kinds of butterflies which can be found, or introduced successfully into certain habitats, my obsession with the world of Lepidoptera began from quite small and humble beginnings. Quite literally, a glass jar. Keeping butterflies and moths is something that is fascinating for most children and adults alike and this is probably in part due to the butterfly's interesting life-cycle. All butterflies go through a process called metamorphosis whereby the adult creature resembles nothing of its larval past.

Life Cycle 


All butterflies start out their lives as eggs. These eggs, which are watertight and cemented onto leaves by the female butterfly, provide the developing larva with protection from the elements. A few days later, ranging anywhere between 2 or 3 (though sometimes longer!), the caterpillar emerges. At this stage in its life, the caterpillar is usually no bigger than a "," on a page, but though it is small in stature, its appetite is monstrous and the caterpillar wastes no time in devouring its first meal; its very own egg-shell. Caterpillars feed mainly on plant matter, leaves, flowers, fruits, although there are some that have more exotic appetites ranging from fabric, to other caterpillars!!! And in just a matter of hours, a caterpillar can eat many times its weight in leaves. 

As the caterpillars eat, they too begin to increase in size and weight and they do this through a process called ecdysis where the old skin is molted to be replaced by the new; sort of like most snakes and reptiles, if you think about it. They will do this for about five times and the stage between each molt is called an instar whereby the appearance of the larva between one instar and another may vary significantly. It is unsurprising, therefore, that at this stage of their lives, butterflies and moths are often regarded as pests and they can have serious impact on agricultural produce. Eventually though, the caterpillar will eat until it cannot grow larger anymore and by now it is at least a couple thousand times its size from when it first hatched from the egg. It must now go through its sixth, and final molt, the in-between stage from caterpillar to butterfly. 

Contrary to popular belief, the chrysalis, or pupa, is not just a shell within which the developing insect "sleeps". Rather, the chrysalis is the insect itself in a dormant state as its cells beneath the tough other skin begin to break down into a biological soup and reshape themselves into the creature it will soon be. The chrysalids of butterflies and moths come in a variety of shapes, colors and sizes. Many chrysalids are cryptic and are designed to mimic pieces of plant debris like dried up leaves or broken twigs so as to avoid detection of birds and parasitic wasps. Some, however, develop brilliant golden or iridescent hues (possibly to reflect light, causing vision impairment in predators). The larva of many butterflies will hang their chrysalids in places that are hard to spot, under leaves for example, or close to tree bark. The larvae of moths on the other hand, have devised more creative strategies for protection. Most moth larvae spin protective silken cocoons over their chrysalids, while some have even taken to burying themselves under ground. All in all, the chrysalis stage of butterflies and moths are the hardest to spot in the wild, making collecting of the insects at this stage extremely difficult, even for some experienced entomologists.

And then comes the final and perhaps most loved stage of these insects. The chrysalis stirs, begins to darken, and then much like the previous stages in its life where the caterpillar had to shed its skin to grow into a larger one, the skin of the chrysalis splits, and quite a different creature comes out. It is the newly formed adult butterfly, and it must begin its life by first climbing up to a tall perch where it can hang upside down without being disturbed, for its wings are still crumpled and it will be several hours before they fill with hemolymph (the insect equivalent of blood), stiffen, and be ready for flight. Eventually, they reach their full size, and almost as if they have come to repay the plants which they have so mercilessly defoliated during their stay as caterpillars, they set off from flower to flower, providing their services of pollination, as they sip the sweet nectar within. 

Butterflies and Humans


It is this miraculous, almost magical transformation which first drew me to the field of lepidopterology, and  though my operation has since expanded from collecting newly hatched larvae in the wild to house in little glass jars, to several breeding cages, and an outdoor flight aviary, the jubilation and excitement I get when witnessing the life-cycle of the butterfly has never diminished over the years. Truly, butterflies are such magnificent creatures. It is hard to imagine the real extent of diversity of species of butterflies and moths there actually are and biodiversity aside (the order of Lepidoptera boasts the second most amount of species in the insect kingdom), these insects fulfill cultural as well as practical and economic roles in the environment as well. Like many other insects, butterflies play an important role in our ecosystem as pollinators. In fact, so important is the role of insects to the continuation of life on our planet that if one day all the insects were to go extinct, so too would most of the plants - many of which humans and other animals are dependent on for food. And because butterflies and moths make up the second largest amount of species in the insect kingdom, it is not surprising that they have been used as markers to determine environmental quality. 

However, due to pollution, deforestation, and drastic weather changes, butterfly populations have begun to decline. Arguably a world without butterflies is not just a world without beauty, it would be a world without life as well and it is as such which I urge anyone and everyone to do whatever they can to help preserve this world we live in and the biodiversity of other living things which call it home as well. To encourage butterflies to breed, those with gardens might wish to set up breeding and feeding grounds for this insects. All it takes is some small amount of gardening skills and some basic research on the types of butterflies in one's locale to plant the right kind of host plants for larvae, and flowering plants for the adults. In doing so, you will have obtained not just a garden filled with these beautiful insects, but also done your part to save the planet.

Remember, without butterflies and similar insects, it would take billions of dollars to replicate the pollination process so perhaps even the most economic and practical minded of us can appreciate the prudence in taking preservation methods when it comes to our planet's biodiversity. After all, why destroy what nature is already providing for free?
